"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service." - Mohandas K. Gandhi

The successes of the JSEI Affiliates programs are a result of the dedication of its dedicated volunteers. Training and curriculum are provided for outreach programs requiring them. Currently, volunteers are being recruited for the following on-going programs.

Screening Assistant, Preschool Vision Screening

Along with a trained eye professional, volunteers conduct vision screening at various community locations to identify young children who have refractive errors or eye muscle problems. Early detection of these treatable conditions can avoid countless school-age problems. Screenings last approximately two hours and are scheduled year-round. Volunteers provide their own transportation. The volunteer commitment is a minimum of four hours per month. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete and return the Volunteer Interest form.

Instructor, VISION In School: This popular program targets fourth through sixth grade students. The curriculum, which was originally designed by the National Eye Institute (NEI) in cooperation with the Association for Research in Vision Ophthalmology (ARVO) has evolved into a fun, informative learning experience that continues to receive positive reviews from students and their teachers.

Eye expert professionals and volunteers go directly into local classrooms and provide an hour of interactive education, covering anatomy of the eye; the mechanics of vision; problems that interfere with vision; and eye health and safety, including injury prevention, at no charge to the school. Activities illustrating dept perception; optical illusions; and impaired vision add interest for the young audience, as does a dissection demonstration using a cow’s eye.

The average classroom presentation, from set-up to finish, requires approximately a two-hour time commitment. The presentations are planned at local schools in Los Angeles from February through July. Volunteers provide their own transportation. The volunteer commitment is a minimum of four hours per month. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete and return the Volunteer Interest form.
