The Institute's program of care for patients encompasses the full range of eye diseases. Nationally and internationally renowned faculty, along with highly skilled clinical fellows and physician residents, provide integrated consultation and treatment, including surgical services.

The JSEI Affiliates have developed several programs that provide humanistic care to enhance the medical services provided at the Institute. These programs include:

Make Surgery Bearable

The Affiliates Make Surgery Bearable program provides plus Dr. Teddy MD teddy bears to every pediatric patient undergoing eye surgery at the Institute. Sponsored by friends and donors, the bear helps children feel secure during a scary time. Sponsorship is $10.00 per bear.

Preschool Vision Screening

Vision problems affect 1 in 20 preschoolers, however children do not realize when they are not seeing properly. The Affiliates provide vision screenings at various community locations to identify young children who have refractive errors or eye muscle problems. Easy detection of these conditions can avoid countless school-age problems.

An Eye Opening Experience for Brian and Brittany is a delightful children’s book that follows two children during a vision screening conducted at their preschool by volunteers from an eye institute. The vision screening detected a possible vision problem in Brian, and he was referred for a complete eye examination. During Brian’s routine eye examination, the eye doctor determined that Brian is nearsighted. Brittany helped Brian select cool frames for his new glasses. When Brian wears his eye glasses he can see objects clearly. He is glad the vision screeners visited his preschool.

A complimentary copy of An Eye Opening Experience for Brian and Brittany is sent to each preschool who schedules a Preschool Vision Screening. The book is read to the students prior to the screening date to prepare the students for the activity. A complimentary copy of the book is also sent to children who participate in the vision screening and are referred for a complete eye examination by an eye professional.

Book Reviews:

The book is colorful and engaging.  The pocket visuals included in the book enhances its cover to cover educational value.  This is a wonderful read aloud for any child is going to have his/her first routine eye examination.

It is a delight to read and such a helpful tool for teaching children what to expect during eye exams. I know it will help countless children (and parents) in the years to come.

MagniVision

Patients of the Jules Stein Eye Institute can access a lending library of low-vision assistive devices as part of the services of the Vision Rehabilitation Center. Through a program called MagniVision, the Affiliates support this library by providing new, technologically advanced devices on a regular basis. They also provide volunteer support to the center.
